Nakamura Utaemon (中村歌右衛門)

Utaemon NAKAMURA is a Kabuki (traditional drama performed by male actors) actor's professional name.

He was originally an actor in Kamigata (Kyoto and Osaka area), but the third went down to Edo. Up to the fourth, Utaemon NAKAMURA was active as tachiyaku (leading male-role actors) and the fifth and later was as onnagata (actor of female roles). It was a most authoritative professional name in the Narikomaya lineage, and all the professional names of the Nakamura families, except the Kanzaburo NAKAMURA and Tomijuro NAKAMURA lineages, originated from descendents or disciples of Utaemon.

Utaemon NAKAMURA (the first): The stage family name was Kagaya (kabuki).

Utaemon NAKAMURA (the second): A disciple of the first. The stage family name was Ebisuya.

Utaemon NAKAMURA (the third): A son of the first. The stage family name was Kagaya (kabuki). The haimyo (also known as haimei, a kabuki actor's offstage name which can be used officially and privately): Baigyoku, Shikan.
His common name was 'Utaemon BAIGYOKU.'

Utaemon NAKAMURA (the fourth): He was a disciple and later adopted by the third. The stage family name was Narikomaya. The haimyo: Kanjaku.
His common name was 'Utaemon KANJAKU.'

Utaemon NAKAMURA (the fifth): An adopted son of Shikan NAKAMURA (the fourth) who was adopted by the fourth. The haimyo: Kaigyoku.

Utaemon NAKAMURA (the sixth): A son of the fifth. The haimyo: Kaishun.
